The Glory Days Of Buffalo Shopping

Many Buffalonians remember their first trip to a local store to purchase a suit, prom dress, gift, or to sit on Santa's lap at Christmas. The nostalgic new book Nine Nine Eight: The Glory Days of Buffalo Shopping should help rekindle those memories.

It goes beyond what may have been the city's most famous street address: 998 Broadway, where the flagship Sattler's store was located. This book is a fond history of all those gleaming stores from Buffalo's robust years.

Local author Michael F. Rizzo has created the first book devoted to the history of Buffalo's retail stores and the people who started them.

Unfortunately for the mom and pops, or even the big Buffalo stores, was that during the time the chains were in Buffalo they adversely the landscape. All of the names we grew up with suffered from the constant pummeling from the bigger chains. We can lament their passing, but maybe we should have shopped there instead of running out to grab that discounted television from the chain store. Maybe a trip to the old East Side neighborhood to buy that refrigerator would have helped keep them in business. Maybe.

Rizzo added "the glory days may have passed us by, but there are plenty of people who fondly remember them."

The 168-page book includes over 100 photos, ads, and logos from Buffalo's best-loved stores, and a comprehensive index.
